“Sometimes I need only to stand wherever I am to feel blessed.” — Mary Oliver, Evidence: Poems

Did you watch the Katie Taylor event on Saturday night in Croke Park?

Eighty‑three thousand people — men, women and children — filling a stadium to witness a female athlete headline a historic event and retire as an undisputed champion. I felt called to write about it, because even though I struggled to watch (the stress of it gets to me), I knew I was witnessing something momentous.

Here is a woman who, only thirty years ago, had to pretend to be a boy just to compete. Her dad helped her break down those early barriers, and now she stands as living proof to girls, boys, women and men that with determination — and the right supports — you can do extraordinary things.

Katie Taylor is often described as one of the kindest people in sport: humble, hard‑working, and utterly dedicated. In interviews she’s spoken about how she never wanted to engage in the “trash talk” so common in boxing — so she didn’t. She let her skill speak for her. She respected her opponents, focused on what she could control, and stayed rooted in her own values.

Imagine holding your centre in a stadium vibrating with anticipation — keeping yourself calm, steady, empowered, and unapologetically aligned with what you believe. After the fight, Eddie Hearn mentioned he had suggested she walk out to “Zombie” by The Cranberries, but she chose “All Hail Jesus,” honouring her faith. I found that fascinating. You could see how the music grounded her, lifted her, and carried her beyond the thinking mind — almost a prayer in motion as she walked toward her final match. She had done her work. Now she offered it up, trusting whatever was meant to unfold.

Even through the screen, you could feel the emotion. The stadium was electric, yet her choice of music seemed to steady the energy — deepening the crowd’s support and creating a resonant, unified cheer that travelled far beyond Croke Park.

It made me think about success — not just achievement, but the felt sense of it.

So for you: What does success look, feel, taste, smell, sound like?

Let your imagination run wild. That’s where all creation begins.
