What does it mean to be an entrepreneur? The definition according to Websters is defined as "a person who starts a business and is willing to risk loss in order to make money." The more traditional, comprehensive definition found in Merriam-Webster's Unabridged Dictionary describes an entrepreneur as one who organises, manages, and assumes the risks of a business or enterprise.

But I think it's more than that. It's the energy, passion, and creativity that sparks ideas to solve problems. I don't think an entrepreneur always risks loss in order to make money, because then what is it to be a social entrepreneur?

The definition online of a social entrepreneur is a person who builds and runs a business with the primary goal of solving critical social, cultural, or environmental problems rather than maximising personal financial gain.

As an entrepreneur with a portfolio career, I've been a contractor, a sole trader, an employee of multiple multinationals, established a thriving family business, and been part of start-up's, the one common thread (for me) has been, "what is the purpose behind what I'm doing".

  • Who and what am I doing this for? For me, my family, time, emotional energy...?

  • Why am I offering this, or what 'problem' am I offering to resolve or support with my product or service?

  • How and when will I do this...?

Obviously there are lots more questions and planning involved in getting set up, but no matter what your plans are, consider how your offering can make the world a better place just by "birthing your idea" (this came up in our session last night -- I love it). And remember, you define what success looks like. Success can be on your own terms and not what social media noise tells you what it should be.

I'm currently working with The Entrepreneurs Academy delivering their in-person Week-1 and Week-10 sessions for Start Your Own Business course delivered on behalf of Fingal LEO at Fingal County Offices in Swords. They provide amazing resources to anyone interested in exploring ideas, scaling businesses, or wanting to connect with like-minded people.

If you have any questions or are curious to learn more let me know and I can help direct you to the right people.
